The Functions of Calcium Chloride in Concrete Industry
- Advantages: Calcium Chloride is the most effective concrete set accelerator. Calcium Chloride is used in cold weather for ready mix concrete to accelerate concrete setting. Calcium Chloride improves workability and strength while hastening the hydration of cement. It makes the mix easier to place and speeds construction by shortening the initial set and curing time. Research has shown that concrete with 2% calcium chloride has equivalent cure strength at 50°F as plain concrete at 70°F. Set times below 50°F will be longer, but the accelerated cure rate will still be greater than that of plain concrete.
- Disadvantages: Though calcium chloride has great advantages in the concrete processing, people should also pay attention to its disadvantages for buliding. Calcium chloride commercial products normally contains sodium chloride, which can erode steel. Chosing calcium chloride containing low sodium chloride is necessary. Strickly, the NaCl should not exceed 1.5%.

- Always add Calcium Chloride to water rather than adding water to Calcium Chloride.
- Never use hot or warm water to dissolve Calcium Chloride.
